Currently, there are numerous AI bills being discussed in Congress, and OpenAI is endorsing some of them.
On Tuesday, OpenAI backed three Senate bills that could influence the federal government's position on artificial intelligence. One of these bills, the Future of AI Innovation Act, would formally establish the United States AI Safety Institute as a federal body responsible for creating standards and guidelines for AI models.
OpenAI's Vice President of Global Affairs, Anna Makanju, stated in a LinkedIn post, "We have consistently supported the mission of the institute, which leads the U.S. government's efforts to ensure that frontier AI systems are developed and deployed safely." Makanju emphasized that the bill provides Congressional support for the institute to mitigate potential risks associated with AI technology.
In addition to the Future of AI Innovation Act, OpenAI also endorsed the NSF AI Education Act and the CREATE AI Act. These bills offer federal scholarships for AI research and introduce AI educational resources in colleges and K-12 settings.
OpenAI's decision to support U.S. legislation aligns with its belief that the government plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and accessibility of AI. Furthermore, as a leading entity in generative AI, OpenAI understands the importance of engaging in regulatory discussions, especially considering its growing valuation and partnerships with major companies like Microsoft and Apple.
OpenAI, along with other tech companies, recently expressed support for the AI Safety Institute in a letter to lawmakers. These endorsements aim to establish collaboration between public and private organizations to develop AI system standards, as outlined in the Future of AI Innovation Act.
The Future of AI Innovation Act also mandates federal agencies to create curated datasets for public use, a task that private companies are unlikely to undertake.
The timing of OpenAI's endorsements is strategic, with two of the bills scheduled for consideration in an Executive Session the following day. This strategic maneuver reflects the efforts of OpenAI and other AI firms to establish positive relationships with policymakers who may influence their regulatory future.
